How the difficulty score works
Our analyzer weighs three signals: word length, the number of syllables, and the presence of rare letters like j, q, x, and z. Longer, multisyllabic words with uncommon letters score higher because they demand more careful encoding when you spell them. The score is a guide, not a verdict — a familiar long word can feel easier than a short unfamiliar one.
How to chunk a word for memory
Working memory can only hold a handful of items at once, which is why a ten-letter word feels overwhelming. Chunking solves this: break the word into syllables or known parts and learn the chunks, not the letters. Perseverance becomes per-se-ver-ance; government becomes govern + ment. Use the syllable count above to decide how many chunks a word needs.
A quick syllable rule of thumb
Every syllable has one vowel sound. Count the vowel sounds (not the vowel letters) and you'll usually land on the right syllable count. Silent final 'e' doesn't add a syllable — that's why cake is one syllable, not two.
Turn analysis into a study plan
Use the difficulty rating to sequence your practice. Warm up on easy words to build momentum, then push into the hard ones while your focus is sharp, and finish with a quick review of anything you missed. A simple, repeatable loop beats random practice every time:
